As the next step in realizing the Baltimore Region Rail System Plan, the Red Line will reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility and air quality, stimulate economic development, revitalize neighborhoods and will help enhance the quality of life for all residents of the region.
The proposed Red Line is a 12 mile, east-west transit corridor connecting the areas of Woodlawn, Edmondson Village, West Baltimore, downtown Baltimore, Inner Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Campus.
The Red Line will provide enhanced mobility and connecting service to Baltimore's existing transit systems - Metro Subway, Central Light Rail and MARC lines. It will also serve major employers such as the Social Security Administration, the University of Maryland downtown campus and medical centers, the Central Downtown Business District, schools, churches, parks and tourist attractions.
The western portion of the Red Line study area consists of suburban residential, shopping and office park land uses. The study area continues through downtown and Fells Point/Patterson Park areas and includes Baltimore row-house communities, planned revitalization areas in West Baltimore and the redeveloping residential and commercial areas in the Inner Harbor East area.
Alternative modes being considered include Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Enhanced Bus Service on surface, and in some locations, with tunnel options.. Fore more information about the Red Line Study, please visit the MTA's Red Line Project website.
